After earning his Bachelor`s Degree in Journalism from Ottawa`s Carleton University in 1980, McMahon worked as a newspaper reporter for five years. In 1985 he quit his job at the St. Catharines Standard to travel to England where he studied film at Bristol University, freelanced as a writer, wrote the book Arctic Twilight, that reflected his strong interest in the North, and wrote for CBC Radio`s Ideas. While at Bristol he completed the 1987 short The Zoo. Recognition of his work includes a nomination for a Michener Award in public service journalism, which is awarded by the Governor General, a first prize for investigative journalism from the Canadian Association of Journalists and a Gemini Award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. McMahon was named winner of the 2011 Canadian Eco Hero Award for his work in raising environmental awareness and exploring environmental issues and stories through film.Company website
