Chelsea McMullan is a non-binary filmmaker and artist whose films and projects have screened on the international festival circuit and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Photography Festival. They were artist in residence at Fabrica, where they made the Genie Award-nominated documentary Derailments. Their awards include the Shaw Media–Hot Docs Development Fund and the Super Channel Documentary Award. My Prairie Home was their third collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada. The documentary-musical about indie singer Rae Spoon, had its U.S. premiere in January 2014, at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. In December 2015 McMullen was honoured by DOC, The Documentary Organization of Canada, with their Vanguard Award which is presented to an emerging or mid-career profession “who demonstrates a keen artistic sensibility and forward thinking approach to the craft, with the potential to lead the next generation of doc-makers.” McMullan, co-directed Ever Deadly with Tanya Tagaq, and it screened at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Their 2023 documentary, Swan Song had its World Premiere at TIFF 2023.
