Megan Wennberg holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Journalism. She is a writer, director and story editor working in both documentary and scripted film and television, and in the beginning, filmmaking wasn’t part of the plan. However, when she made a short documentary at journalism school in Halifax, she fell in love with the process. As a filmmaker, she is drawn to unique characters and points of view. Her first feature documentary, Drag Kids, premiered at the 2019 Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival and went on to screen at numerous festivals around the world. It was named Best Canadian Feature at the Inside Out Festivals in Toronto and Ottawa, Best Canadian Feature at the Atlantic Film Festival, Best Documentary for Youth at the Bergen International Film Festival as well as at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, NewFest New York’s LGBTQ Film Festival and Québec’s RIDM where it was selected to be the closing night film. Her film The Killing of Phillip Boudreau won the Screen Nova Scotia Award for Best Documentary in 2021, and Wennberg won WIFT-AT’s Award for Best Director. Her 2023 documentary Unsyncable, which premiered at Hot Docs, follows six senior artistic swimmers (aged 63 – 82) preparing for the U.S. Masters Artistic Swimming Championships, formerly called synchronized swimming. We list her credits as a Director first.
