Heather (Bobbi Salvör), is a teenage redheaded social misfit who struggles against the constrictive forces in her small town life in Canada. Her mother, Patti (Heidi von Palleske), is a longtime alcoholic whose condition affects the entire family dynamic. But, her own animalistic transformation during a full moon keeps her a prisoner in her own suffocating life. She would love to join the local hockey team, but cannot because of her gender. Then there’s her attraction to the tantalizing and gorgeous figure skater Jonny (Amandla Stenberg) who is dealing with a nasty boyfriend and overbearing father seeking fame and fortune with his daughter’s talent. Finding love with Jonny is too hard to resist, and Heather finally embraces her desires at the risk of revealing her shape-shifting secret.
