(February 7, 2023 – Toronto, ON) Toronto-born actor Stephan James has come a long, long way in his relatively short career. With two hit projects early in his career, including If Beale Street Could Talk and Amazon Prime’s limited series Homecoming, his path to stardom has been a straight line from those early days playing Julian in the series Degrassi: The Next Generation.

He first came to international attention when he starred as Olympic hero Jesse Owens in the Canadian co-production Race, for which he won a Canadian Screen Award. Since then he has played a number of real people, including U.S. high school running back T.K. Kelly in When the Game Stands Tall, and American politician and one time student activist John Lewis in Ava DuVernay’s drama Selma, which was given the Black Film Critics Circle Award for Best Ensemble.

Collaborating with Julia Roberts on Homecoming has been decidedly unique, according to James who said, “She’s such a great scene partner that sometimes I’m taken aback by her performance.”
