Shelley Niro is a filmmaker, painter, photographer and writer who has exhibited her work in Canada and the United States. Born in Niagara Falls, New York, Niro is a member of the Six Nations Reserve, Turtle Clan, Bay of Quinte Mohawk. She has worked in a variety of media, including beadwork, painting, photography and film. Her work challenges stereotypical images of Aboriginal peoples and though it delves into serious issues and is rich with poignant imagery, Niro inserts humour into her practice. She has received considerable attention for her work in film, including her short, The Shirt, which was presented at the 2003 Venice Biennal as well as at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. Her first feature film, Kissed By Lightning, about a Mohawk painter in a state of grief, won the Santa Fe Film Festival’s Milagro Award for Best Indigenous Film. She was a fellow at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institute (1997) and was acclaimed by the New York State Historical Association for her exhibit, Where We Stand. She completed a Masters of Fine Art degree at the University of Western Ontario and trained in Durham College’s Graphics Programme in Oshawa, and at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, Ontario. Her 2019 feature, The Incredible 25th Year of Mitzi Bearclaw was selected to open the ReelWorld Film Festival in Toronto. We list her credits as a Director first.
