Inspired by one of the most terrifying children’s book series of all time, originally written by Alvin Schwartz, Academy Award-winning producer-writer-director Guillermo del Toro, along with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan wrote the story for this film, which was then turned into a screenplay by brothers Dan and Kevin Hageman. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is set in the small town of Mill Valley, where for as long as anyone can remember, the Bellows family and their mansion, now thought to be haunted, has occupied a huge and terrifying place in the minds and psyches of the townspeople. Once upon a time Sarah Bellows (Kathleen Pollard), a young girl with horrible secrets, wrote a book of scary stories about her tortured life. Now teenagers who read the book discover its frightening power. The stories set off their darkest fears and create terrifying manifestations that come after them. Ultimately they must face their greatest fears in order to save their own lives. A Canada-U.S. coproduction, production began on August 27, 2018, and ended on November 1, 2018, in St. Thomas, Ontario. |
