Snow Cake is a Canada/UK co-production set in the middle of winter in Wawa, Ontario. Alan Rickman plays a quiet, brooding man named Alex traveling at first by plane from England, then by car across Ontario when he takes a break at a truck stop. Here he meets the irrepressible Vivienne Freeman played flawlessly by Emily Hampshire. Later, following a tragic accident, Alex needs to find Vivienne’s sister, Linda, played by Sigourney Weaver. Linda is a high-functioning autistic woman played with an authenticity that shows Weaver’s abilities as an actor unlike any other role she has ever attempted. When Alex enters her life he becomes captured for a time in Wawa. Captured by his guilt, his needs, and by next door neighbour Maggie, played gently and beautifully by Carrie-Anne Moss. The film had its Canadian premiere at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. |
