B: April 22, 1959 in Edmonton, Alberta
Catherine Mary Stewart grew up in an academic family. Her mother was a physiologist, and her father was a renowned marine biologist from the University of Alberta. But Stewart wanted a different life and began dancing at age seven. She joined a professional company by time she was 16 and toured the Middle East and Europe. At 19, she moved to London and for the next two years, in addition to dance, she studied drama and singing. Being in the right place at the right time led to a role in the low-budget musical sci-fi film The Apple, made in 1979 and released in 1980. A move to Los Angeles set her career in motion.
