Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Richard Van Camp, The Lesser Blessed is the story of Larry Sole, a Tlicho Indian growing up in the small northern town of Fort Simmer. At sixteen, he loves heavy metal, the North and Juliet Hope, the high school slut. Skinny as spaghetti, nervy and self-deprecating, Larry is an appealing mixture of bravado and vulnerability. Larry lurks on the outskirts of his high school social scene, largely friendless and loving Juliet from afar, until a new kid named Johnny comes to town. Johnny is a small town James Dean and in befriending Larry, empowers him. But when Johnny and Juliet inevitably hook up, the dark memory of a past accident that almost killed him begins to terrorize Larry in the present, threatening to devastate the tenuous construction of his life. A coming-of-age story that turns the genre on its head, The Lesser Blessed is an eye-opening depiction of what it is to be young and in love on the edge of the world in the 21st century. |
