This Movie Is Broken blends a fictional story with a real outdoor concert staged by the Toronto rockband Broken Social Scene. The concert was held during the 2009 garbage strike in that city. The plot revolves around Bruno and his long-time girlfriend, Caroline. In fact, their friendship dates back to childhood. As the film begins they are waking up together on a makeshift rooftop bed. For Bruno their night together was unbelievable. It clearly meant more to him than to her as she dismisses the event as “just sex.” Bruno hopes for something more lasting but the future of their relationship is threatened by time and distance. Caroline must return to her studies in Paris. And she is booked on a flight out of Toronto the very next day. Before she leaves she wants to see her favourite band who are playing a concert that night. Bruno was hoping for a more romantic ending. Unfortunately his best friend Blake (Kerr Hewitt) opens his big mouth and tells Caroline that Bruno can get them backstage passes to see Broken Social Scene, which to her sounds like the best, most romantic way to spend their evening together.
