Marie Soleil Tougas was accompanying her boyfriend, director Jean-Claude Lauzon who was flying a Cessna 180K on 10 August 1997 when the plane hit the south slope of a valley running alongside the aux Mélèzes River in northern Quebec near Ungava Bay. Both Lauzon and Marie-Soleil Tougas were fatally injured. The aircraft was destroyed by a fire that started a few seconds after impact. Tougas was 27-years-old.
