Nia Vardalos started out in life as Antonia Eugenia Vardalos, and had accomplished quite a bit before gaining almost overnight success with her movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. A come-from-nowhere box office hit that launched her career both as an actor and screenwriter and brought instant fame with an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay. The film was flipped into the TV series My Big Fat Greek Life but despite featuring most of film’s original cast, including Vardalos, the effort was ultimately unsuccessful. Vardalos is married to actor Ian Gomez, who appeared in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and she became a U.S. citizen in 1999. Her film, My Life in Ruins was selected to close the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, opens in September 2023. |
