Wilby Wonderful is a dark comedy about truth, transformation and the difficulty of finding a quiet place to kill yourself. Over the course of 24 hours, we follow the lives of several characters as they attempt to maintain business as usual in the face of a very unusual business in the small Maritime island town of Wilby. Carol French, played by Sandra Oh, is a local realtor, who is trying to sell the mayor (Maury Chaykin) her late mother-in-law’s house. Her police officer husband Buddy (Paul Gross) is in the middle of an investigation into the town’s deviant underbelly while about to begin a love affair with the wrong-side-of-the-tracks just-back-in-town Sandra Anderson (Rebecca Jenkins). Meanwhile, Sandra’s daughter Emily (Ellen Page) is about to begin a love affair of her own. Add to the mix the apparently dyslexic sign painter Duck MacDonald (Callum Keith Rennie), the new-to-town depressive video store owner Dan Jarvis (James Allodi) and Buddy’s partner – thick as a brick Stan (Daniel MacIvor) and it’s just another Thursday in Wilby. But why is Dan trying to kill himself in all the wrong places? Where are all the drugs suddenly coming from? What is Carol going to do about the body in the closet? And why does Duck have the whole thing backwards? |
