The story centres on renowned Anishinaabe musician Mary Birchbark who comes home to Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation in northern Ontario, exhausted by many years on the road touring internationally with her band. She wants to reconnect with the vast wilderness of her reserve, but begins to sense that someone might be watching her. Unsure of what is real and what is imagined, Mary embraces isolation as she explores the psychological impact of her past and present. While she hopes to restore herself, her past success makes her a commodity to some, and it can be tricky to hide from the demands of the outside world. Production of Falls Around Her took place on the sacred land of Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, which is home to writer and director Darlene Naponse and her ancestors. Selected to have its World Premiere at TIFF, it was chosen to open the 2018 imagineNATIVE festival in October of 2018. |
