Remembering Charles Officer
by Ralph Lucas – Publisher

(December 4, 2023 – Toronto, ON) As we reported yesterday on X, Facebook and LinkedIn, Toronto-born filmmaker and actor Charles Officer has died. We didn’t have any details yesterday and we didn’t have a confirmed date. Today we know he died on the first day of the last month of the year.

His foundation in directing came from his previous work as a graphic designer and actor. His work was special and he received recognition from his first short, When Morning Comes, which premiered at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival to wide acclaim. His second film Short Hymn Silent War premiered at TIFF 2002, and it received a Special Jury Citation for Best Canadian Short. It went on to screen at Sundance and was nominated for a Genie Award in 2004. There was much more remarkable work to come and what could have continued to come, we’ll now never know.
