There aren’t too many people in the Northernstars database who began their life in the Yukon but Victor Jory is one. A few US sources have shifted Dawson City to Alaska, but they’re really not known for their knowledge of anything foreign. Jory grew up in the Yukon but had made his way south and went to high school in California. Being near Hollywood must have had some influence on him and he did become interested in acting and spent some time learning the basics of his craft at the Pasadena Playhouse. University, however, didn’t hold much for the young transplanted Canadian and after just one year he signed up with the U.S. Coast Guard. Deep down he knew he wanted to act and after his stint in service, Jory returned to the stage eventually making his New York debut in 1929. One year later he costarred in the Broadway production of Berkeley Square. His commanding presence and remarkable voice quickly brought the attention of Hollywood where they had just started making “talkies” and actors with great voices were in high demand. He began his film career in 1930 and would spend the next 50 years in front of the cameras.
